There is nowhere else on earth quite like the Richtersveld. South Africa’s most remote and otherworldly national park — inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and recognised as the only arid biodiversity hotspot on the planet — rewards adventurous 4×4 travellers with landscapes, wildlife and plant life found absolutely nowhere else.
Tucked into the north-western corner of the Northern Cape’s Namaqualand region, the Richtersveld is a mountainous desert of volcanic rock, razor-edged kloofs and sweeping coastal plains that shift and change with every kilometre of trail. The terrain ranges from sea level to 1 377 m at Cornellsberg, with the Orange River — forming the border with Namibia — threading through the valley below like a green lifeline through a burnt-ochre world. The landscape has been described as “Martian”, and it earns the comparison: vast, silent, and sculpted by geological forces spanning billions of years.
Yet this apparent barrenness is a masterclass in disguise. The Richtersveld supports an astonishing array of endemic succulents, desert-adapted plants, birds and animals — over 360 plant species, approximately 200 bird species, and desert fauna including Hartmann’s mountain zebra, baboons, jackals, porcupines, and mongooses — all specially evolved for survival in one of Africa’s harshest environments. This is a destination for the genuinely curious: the kind of traveller who looks closer and is rewarded for it.
We’ll camp along the banks of the Orange River under the stars, exploring kloofs and mountain trails by day before wrapping up the tour with a night at the spectacular Augrabies Falls National Park — home to the second-largest waterfall in Southern Africa and one of the most dramatic gorge systems on the continent.
The Richtersveld is a 4×4-only park and this tour is suitable for off-road trailers. Large caravans are not recommended. Maximum 7 vehicles per group.
