Liuwa Plain National Park — the wildebeest migration
Situated in the Upper Zambezi floodplains of Western Zambia, Liuwa Plain covers 3 600 km² of vast open grassland and wooded islands — a 70 km long, 30 km wide plain that floods from late December to June each year. By November, massive herds of wildebeest complete a 200 km migration route, concentrating in the southern reaches of the park in one of Africa’s most underrated wildlife events. Burchell’s zebra, tsessebe, oribi, and Southern reedbuck share the plain, while lion, spotted hyena, and cheetah follow the herds. Rare sightings of wild dog and leopard have also been recorded here.
Kasanka National Park — the fruit bat migration
Up to ten million straw-coloured fruit bats descend on Kasanka National Park each November as a specific woodland’s fruit ripens — the largest mammal migration on earth by sheer number of individuals. They roost in dense clusters on tree trunks through the day, and at sunset the sky fills with a living, swirling mass as millions take flight together. You’ll watch it all from a purpose-built 60 ft treetop hide — and during daylight hours, look down into the swamp below for sitatunga, one of Africa’s most elusive antelopes. This spectacle happens in other parts of Africa, but Kasanka keeps it wild, remote, and utterly awe-inspiring.
