The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park spans 38 000 km² across the Northern Cape of South Africa and southern Botswana — making it one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the first formally declared transfrontier park in southern Africa, and it remains one of the best places on the continent to see large predators in a natural, uncrowded setting.
The landscape is defined by two ancient, fossil river systems — the Auob and Nossob — whose dry sandy riverbeds cut through a sea of red Kalahari dunes and golden grassland. This safari explores the park in depth, starting in the remote Mabuasehube section before continuing through Nossob and Mata Mata. The open terrain and lack of dense vegetation makes for exceptional visibility and extraordinary game viewing.

The Kgalagadi’s open dune and dry riverbed landscape means exceptional visibility — you can often spot predators kilometres away. The park is famous for its Kalahari lions, which are larger than their savannah counterparts and sometimes sport distinctive black manes. Cheetah are seen regularly on the open plains, leopard patrol the camelthorn trees along the riverbeds, and brown hyena — rarely seen elsewhere — are a genuine Kgalagadi speciality.
March is an excellent time — the summer rains are ending, the dunes are at their most vivid red, and the bush is green and lush. Predators are active, migratory birds are still present, and the park is less crowded than the peak winter season. Temperatures can be warm, so early morning and late afternoon game drives are the most productive.

Yes. The Kgalagadi’s remote wilderness camps and many of its best game-viewing tracks require a high-clearance 4×4. The soft Kalahari sand on the dune roads and dry riverbeds makes 4-wheel drive essential. Off-road trailers are welcome; large caravans are not recommended for the wilderness campsites.
Augrabies Falls is an optional add-on for the final day, at your leisure — after enjoying Riemvasmaak’s natural hot springs, you’re welcome to head over to see the falls on your way home if you’d like to extend the trip slightly. It’s not a compulsory stop.
